They are also learning about alternate revenue models, such as licensing to TV, movies, etc. The companies licensing this music are learning this as well, and also paying less, while the artist gets a fairer share of the 'pie'. Bands are also learning that they don't need to be mega-stars to make money. Many of the bands and artists mentioned in the article are ones that you would not give a second thought to, as they appear to be too 'niche' in their appeal.
